Sengoku (Neo Geo and Super NES)
This might seem unfair, but I just can't give this masterpiece
a formal review. In my opinion , writing a formal review
for this game would be wasting time that could be better
used PLAYING this game. If you enjoy side-scrolling fighters,
then this one gets my highest recommendation. Not only that,
but you can pick it up for under $50 if you shop online.
Gameplay:
Sengoku follows the basic two-player side-scrolling fighter
premise, where fighters walk left-to-right and punch-punch-kick
enemies until they disappear. Few games of this format stand
out as classics; only Double Dragon, TMNT, Final Fight,
and Streets of Rage come to mind as other standouts. Grab
a friend, and have at it, it's a perfect 2-player game to
pick up for a boring Sunday.
Graphics:
You'll see sweet 2-d graphics, shape-shifting fighters,
and huge bosses to fight. The color selection is perfect,
and the speed is just right. What more could you ask for
in this type of game? Well, one might ask for less repetition
and more varied characters... This was one of the first
games on the old Neo Geo, and it's age shows. Anyone else
remember hating seeing 15 palette-swaps of the same samurai?
Sound and Music:
In the sound department, you'll be treated to good, but
not great music, and assorted "swashbangboom"
sound effects that are very fitting. Naturally, there isn't
anything outstanding here, this game is rather small as
Neo Geo games go; there just isn't much space for the typically
excellent SNK tunes.
Replay Value:
You'll pick it up to play on those rainy days for years
to come. Don't miss out on this game, if you have the means
to play it. No one is claiming it to be the best 2d side-scroller
ever, but it is a blast to play. This one can be had in
a variety of forms, and most are just fine. The best version
to pick up is the original Neo-Geo version that can be found
today in MVS, CD, or home cartridge format. Just avoid the
Super NES version, it's terrible!!
